Tesla's in-car system gets a "Chinese brain"! Doubao large model goes live: no longer a walkie-talkie for Q&A.

According to Volcano Engine's official account, Tesla China's in-car system has recently launched the Doubao large model. After an OTA update, owners can press and hold the steering wheel voice button to activate the new AI voice assistant.
Compared to the previous mechanical "one question, one answer" interaction, the new assistant is based on Doubao's end-to-end real-time voice model, enabling a more natural, continuous, and proactive conversation experience—like having a friend in the passenger seat who always keeps the conversation going.
In fact, as early as July 31, Tesla China began rolling out the 2026.14.13 vehicle software update in batches, covering the entire Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X lineup, with newly delivered vehicles getting priority.
The core highlight of this update is the integration of ByteDance's Doubao large model, marking the official entry of Tesla's in-car voice interaction into the large model era.
The Doubao large model adopts an end-to-end voice interaction architecture, directly achieving "voice-to-voice" understanding and generation, bypassing the traditional voice assistant's intermediate steps of "speech-to-text → text understanding → text-to-speech," resulting in lower latency and smoother conversations.
In practical use, owners can activate the voice assistant via "Hey, Tesla" or the steering wheel scroll button. Doubao handles voice command functions, including navigation setup, media playback control, and air conditioning temperature adjustment, while also supporting voice queries of the owner's manual.
The DeepSeek model provides interactive services such as AI casual chat and information queries. The two have clear division of labor—Doubao doesn't touch deep vehicle control permissions, only enhancing the voice layer, while vehicle control commands still go through the original reliable pipeline.
Notably, Musk, who takes pride in his self-developed Grok model, chose a local solution for the Chinese market.
Industry insiders analyze that Chinese-language speech recognition and natural conversation capabilities are key considerations. Doubao's localization advantages in Chinese emotional understanding, dialect recognition, and multi-command processing are gaps that Tesla's original voice system would struggle to fill in the short term.
