Volvo's first D-class flagship in 100 years revealed! Code name 556 targets Zun Jie S800: entire vehicle engineering by Geely

According to 36Kr Auto, Volvo is preparing to launch an all-new D-class ultra-luxury flagship sedan, internally codenamed "556", positioned to rival the Zunjie S800, and will surpass the current S90 model to become the highest-spec sedan in Volvo's century-long history.
The report states that in May this year, Duan Jianjun moved from Beijing Benz to Volvo, taking full control of the production, R&D, supply, and sales systems. Over the past 13 years, Duan Jianjun helped Mercedes establish a near-monopoly for the S-Class and Maybach in China's D-class sedan market, earning him the reputation of a "luxury car strategist."
The D-class sedan project internally codenamed "556" at Volvo is precisely the first major battle he has taken up less than 100 days into his new role.
Insiders reveal that the "556" project is planned as a model exclusive to China and will adopt the same joint development model as the Volvo XC70.
The specific division of labor is: Volvo China is responsible for product definition, safety standard control, and vehicle certification, while three-electric system development, vehicle engineering, and supply chain are handled by Geely's China R&D team.
The strategic significance of the "556" project extends beyond a single vehicle. It marks Volvo's first D-class executive sedan in its 100-year history and Geely Group's first foray into this market segment in its 40 years of existence.
A source revealed that Geely's core management has demanded mobilizing resources from the entire group to support the project. "The company has postponed or delayed similar projects from Galaxy, Lynk & Co, and Zeekr to ensure the Volvo '556' project receives optimal resource allocation."
The backdrop for this decision is the unprecedented reshaping of China's D-class luxury sedan market.
Since its launch in 2025, the Zunjie S800 has delivered over 18,500 units cumulatively, topping the sales chart for luxury sedans priced above 700,000 yuan for eight consecutive months. Its price range is 708,000 to 1,018,000 yuan, with the Grand Design Collector's Edition starting at 1,388,000 yuan. The dominance of traditional luxury brands in this price bracket is rapidly eroding.
Volvo's current flagship sedan, the S90, measures 5,090mm in length with a wheelbase of 3,061mm. Its official guide price starts at 450,900 yuan, but actual terminal prices have dropped to around 270,000 yuan, creating a clear gap with the D-class sedan market.
The launch of the "556" project means Volvo will make its first breakthrough into the 700,000 yuan or even million-yuan price range, going head-to-head with the Zunjie S800 and Maybach S-Class.
Moreover, Duan Jianjun, who oversaw the S-Class and Maybach at Mercedes for 13 years, has a deep understanding of Chinese ultra-luxury car consumers' psychology and channel operations. His arrival is seen as a key step for Volvo to fill the gap in its brand upward push.
However, the "556" project faces significant challenges. The Zunjie S800 has demonstrated the market appeal of domestic ultra-luxury sedans in less than a year. Whether Volvo can carve out a niche in the D-class sedan market with its brand DNA of safety depends on the comprehensive synergy of product strength, pricing strategy, and channel capabilities.
