First all-electric four-seat convertible! BMW i4 convertible version exposed: will debut in 2028.

according to sources, BMW has officially approved the production plan for the all-electric i4 Convertible (internal codename NA3), which is expected to be officially launched in 2028. This will be BMW's first mass-produced all-electric four-seat convertible.

It is reported that the BMW all-electric i4 Convertible will be based on BMW's new generation Neue Klasse pure electric platform, sharing the technical architecture with the upcoming i3 sedan.

The car is expected to adopt a two-door, four-seat (2+2) layout and an electrically folding fabric soft top, rather than a heavier and structurally more complex metal hardtop.

The soft top design not only helps control the vehicle's overall weight and lower the center of gravity but also follows the traditional design of BMW's 4 Series convertible models.

In BMW's internal codename system, the Neue Klasse i3 sedan is codenamed NA0, the i3 Touring is NA1, the upcoming i4 coupe is NA2, and the i4 Convertible is NA3.

The global electric convertible market is currently almost blank. The only new all-electric convertible currently on sale in the U.S. market is the Maserati GranCabrio Folgore, with a starting price as high as $206,095.

Although the European market has models like the Fiat 500e Convertible and MG Cyberster, none have entered the U.S. market. BMW's all-electric i4 Convertible is expected to fill this market gap with a relatively affordable positioning.

Range is the core engineering challenge facing electric convertibles. Removing the roof reduces body rigidity, requiring additional reinforcement to compensate, which inevitably increases vehicle weight.

Based on the i3 sedan's EPA range benchmark of approximately 440 miles (about 708 km), the convertible version is expected to lose about 15% of its range due to added weight and deteriorated aerodynamics, but it can still remain above 350 miles (over 563 km).

The i3 sedan is based on an 800V architecture, supporting up to 400kW fast charging, capable of replenishing about 400 km of range in 10 minutes.

In terms of product replacement rhythm, the current i4 Gran Coupe is expected to cease production in 2027, followed by a roughly one-year gap for the i4 lineup until the coupe and convertible versions arrive in 2028.
