Windows 11 with 8GB RAM is unbearably laggy: Microsoft has pushed an update to fix it, and real-world tests show it's noticeably faster.

For a long time, many users have complained that Windows 11 is noticeably laggy on devices with the common 8GB RAM configuration, with the system's own background memory usage being too high and squeezing the space available for applications to run, directly impacting the everyday user experience.
In response to this pain point raised by users, Microsoft previously stated publicly that it would focus core technical resources on advancing targeted optimization efforts. Based on the updates currently being pushed out, they have indeed begun implementing the corresponding optimizations.
Foreign media monitoring shows that in the optional update KB5101684 pushed in July and the official cumulative update KB5121003 pushed in August, Microsoft made deep optimizations to Windows 11's memory usage logic, significantly reducing ineffective background resource consumption, allowing ordinary users to directly perceive a noticeable improvement in overall system speed.
In terms of specific functional and experience improvements, these two rounds of updates mainly delivered several targeted adjustments.
This includes greatly improving the operational stability of the core system process explorer.exe in common scenarios such as opening jump lists, accessing recently used files, sharing files and folders, and using Task View and multiple desktops, reducing lag and crash issues caused by abnormal resource usage.
After the updates, the stability of the Windows login screen and lock screen has noticeably improved, especially in extreme scenarios where available system memory is insufficient, with the previous freeze-and-spinner issues becoming rare. The loading logic for the Start menu and taskbar during device startup has also been optimized, resulting in faster boot times.
These updates also specifically optimized the loading reliability of the taskbar system tray area when using touch devices in tablet mode, preventing issues where tray icons fail to load fully or remain blank for extended periods.
The new system version improves the configuration reliability of Start menu view preferences, allowing user-selected view styles to be stably preserved without reverting to default settings after a restart.
Regarding the underlying background cleanup logic, these two rounds of updates also made targeted adjustments, greatly improving the efficiency of idle resource reclamation and directly boosting system responsiveness across all scenarios.
In addition, these updates significantly improved the system's built-in app search functionality. When users search for installed applications, the new algorithm can better recognize misspelled and incompletely entered app names, noticeably improving search accuracy.
Previously, Windows 11 devices with 8GB RAM frequently showed insufficient memory warnings after opening just a few applications. After these two rounds of targeted optimization updates, the actual available running space on such devices has noticeably increased, and the long-standing pain point of lag during extended use has seen very tangible improvement.
