China tops Australia's new car import rankings! Local industry leaders: China is the future of the automotive industry.

According to reports, Tony Weber, CEO of the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries of Australia, said in a recent interview that electric vehicles represent the trend in the automotive industry, and Chinese car brands, primarily focused on new energy vehicles, are growing rapidly in Australia's highly competitive market, winning the trust of Australian consumers through continuous innovation and quality service.

Weber has visited China to inspect the R&D and production of the automotive industry firsthand, and he commented, "In China, I saw the future of the automotive industry."

Weber stated that Chinese automakers are deepening their presence in the Australian market by continuously expanding physical dealer networks and providing after-sales services, earning the favor of Australian consumers.

"Australia is a very open market and also a highly competitive one. Chinese automakers are enhancing their product competitiveness through ongoing innovation."

The pace of Chinese automakers expanding overseas continues to accelerate. According to official data from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI), in June registrations, vehicles from China (including about 8,600 Teslas produced in Shanghai) sold 46,600 units, while vehicles from Japan sold 27,100 units.

In February of this year, China became Australia's largest monthly source of new cars for the first time. In January, BYD sold 5,001 vehicles in Australia, a year-on-year increase of 641%, ten times Tesla's 501 units, with Chinese brands occupying the top six spots in Australian electric vehicle sales. In early 2024, over 80% of electric vehicles sold in Australia were manufactured in China.

Data shows that in July this year, pure electric vehicles performed strongly in Australia's new car market, accounting for 21.7% of sales, exceeding one-fifth of total sales for two consecutive months. Including hybrid vehicles, electrified vehicles accounted for 48.4% of Australia's new car market that month. Weber believes these figures reflect Australia's transition toward low-emission vehicles.

Looking ahead to the prospects of cooperation between Australia and China in the electric vehicle sector, Weber is confident. He stated that Australia has extensive trade relations with many countries, and when certain nations possess commercial and technological advantages, Australia naturally supports those countries and their suppliers in entering the Australian market and providing relevant infrastructure.
