AMD new CPU benchmark scores regress! Ryzen AI 9 HX PRO 470 is not as good as the previous generation 370

On July 27, according to Notebookcheck's real-world testing, the performance improvement of the AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX PRO 470 processor is extremely limited, with some benchmarks even lower than the previous generation HX PRO 370.

In terms of specifications, both chips adopt a hybrid architecture with 4 Zen 5 cores and 8 Zen 5c cores, totaling 12 cores and 24 threads. The L2 and L3 cache capacities are 12MB and 24MB respectively, completely identical. The only differences are that the maximum boost frequency has been increased from 5.1GHz to 5.2GHz, and the integrated Radeon 890M graphics frequency has been raised from 2.9GHz to 3.1GHz.

In the tests, Notebookcheck compared the Dell Pro 7 14 equipped with the HX PRO 470 against the Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 6 equipped with the HX PRO 370.

In the Cinebench R15 multi-core loop benchmark, the new Dell averaged 2690 points, while the older Lenovo actually scored 2736 points. During the test, the Dell initially scored 3274 points, then dropped to 2709 points, showing a sustained performance degradation of about 17%.

Graphics benchmarks are also about 20% lower than the older Lenovo, despite the Radeon 890M having a higher frequency.

This does not mean the new integrated graphics is slower at the chip level. Laptop thermal design, firmware tuning, memory configuration, and manufacturer power limits can all overshadow minor frequency differences. However, the results clearly show how minimal the guaranteed performance improvement is for the new model.

The truly meaningful upgrades in the HX PRO 470 are the 55 TOPS NPU (previous gen 50 TOPS), support for faster LPDDR5X-8533 memory (previous gen LPDDR5X-8000), and AMD PRO enterprise management and security features.

These are meaningful for enterprises but do not change everyday CPU or GPU performance. For ordinary consumers, an older HX PRO 370 laptop with better cooling or more aggressive power limits may be just as fast or even faster.
