Task Manager Redone! Original Creator Returns to Build a Cyberpunk New Version: Mac First, Windows Later

Dave Plummer, the programmer who developed Windows Task Manager for Microsoft in 1996, has recently released a brand-new remastered version called Task Manager OG (TMOG), featuring a cyberpunk-style interface. The Mac version is now available for free download on the official website, with the Windows version set to follow soon.

Plummer was involved in developing several classic Windows software titles. According to his own account, Task Manager was originally written at home before being brought into Microsoft, and it began shipping with Windows systems in 1996.

In 2003, Plummer left Microsoft to found his own software company. Since then, he has remained active on social media, sharing stories about the early days of Microsoft and Windows.

Earlier this year, Plummer shared a cyberpunk-style concept design for Task Manager, complete with neon lighting and synthwave music, delivering a striking visual experience.

Now he has turned that concept into a usable product. Compared to the original concept art, it's been toned down—the neon elements are still present but subdued, and the synthwave music has been swapped for classic rock.

TMOG's design philosophy blends the clarity of Mac's Activity Monitor with the in-depth information of Windows Task Manager. The main interface directly displays core data such as CPU, GPU, memory, storage, and temperature, with more detailed diagnostic information placed in a secondary layer.

Plummer stated that TMOG's footprint is only half the size of the original Windows Task Manager. The software is currently free, with a possible Pro version in the future.

The only downside is that TMOG currently supports only macOS, so Windows users will need to wait a bit longer. When announcing it on social media, Plummer said: "The Mac version is officially live starting today, with Windows support coming soon."
