Demand skyrockets 4 times! TSMC's 2nm capacity explodes: single factory monthly output of 20,000 wafers hits new high

On July 27, according to Fast Tech, TSMC's 2nm process is entering a full-speed advancement phase. Currently, among the five dedicated 2nm wafer fabs in the Taiwan region of China, Fab 20 has already met its capacity target first, with monthly output officially exceeding 20,000 wafers.

The most intuitive way to gauge the popularity of a new process is through "tape-out" data (sample production after chip design completion). TSMC revealed during its earnings call that the number of 2nm tape-outs has reached four times that of 3nm at the same stage. This indicates explosive growth in global major customers' R&D willingness and potential orders for 2nm.

Even more strikingly, although no customer has yet shipped 2nm chips in volume, the 2nm process has already contributed approximately 3% of TSMC's revenue in the third quarter of 2026. This portion comes mainly from early design verification and tape-out fees, highlighting the high unit price of 2nm and the urgency of market demand.

The first to benefit from the 2nm dividend will be mobile phone chips. Google's Pixel 11 series is expected to launch in August with the Tensor G6 chip, followed by Apple's iPhone 18 series in September, whose A20 Pro chip is also based on TSMC's 2nm process. These two companies taking turns leading the charge essentially lock in the initial 2nm capacity.

However, phone chips are just the appetizer. AI chips will be the main force for 2nm in the future. AMD has announced that its MI455X GPU for Agentic AI will use TSMC's 2nm process, and NVIDIA's next-generation Rubin platform is also lining up.

As AI customers gradually migrate to the new process, the demand structure for 2nm will shift from consumer-grade chips to higher-margin AI computing chips. This is also the core basis for industry expectations that 2nm demand will soon surpass 3nm.

For now, however, 3nm remains TSMC's main production capacity, with a monthly volume of 175,000 wafers far ahead, and it will not cede the top spot in the short term.
