OpenAI Announces $1 Trillion Plan to Build the World’s Largest AI Data Center Network

OpenAI on Tuesday unveiled an ambitious blueprint for a global computing power expansion, with planned investments reaching $1 trillion to build massive AI computing infrastructure across the United States and international markets.

The company’s first flagship project, located about 180 miles west of Dallas, spans an area roughly the size of New York’s Central Park. Once completed, it is expected to become the largest AI supercomputing campus in the world.

Currently, construction is moving at full speed, with eight state-of-the-art data centers rising simultaneously. The site will have a total capacity of approximately 900 megawatts, supported by on-site gas turbines to provide backup power. More than 6,000 workers are currently on rotating shifts to keep the project on schedule.

OpenAI announced partnerships with Oracle and SoftBank, revealing plans to build five additional U.S.-based data centers, which together will add nearly 7 gigawatts of computing capacity—enough to power about 8 million households.

Driven by surging demand for products like ChatGPT, which now boasts over 700 million weekly active users, OpenAI estimates it will ultimately require over 20 gigawatts of compute capacity, potentially expanding to 100 gigawatts in the future. This could bring the total investment to as high as $5 trillion, surpassing the annual GDP of countries like Japan or Germany.

The first completed facility, named “Building 1,” houses rows of server racks packed with tens of thousands of NVIDIA GB200 GPUs, each with a unit cost comparable to a Tesla Model 3.

While the project is creating massive temporary construction employment, the long-term operational workforce will be relatively small. Oracle projects the campus will support around 1,700 permanent jobs upon completion.

Local Texas officials have welcomed the project, viewing it as a catalyst for regional industrial transformation and economic revitalization.

With this unprecedented initiative, OpenAI is positioning itself at the forefront of the global race for AI infrastructure dominance, setting new benchmarks for scale and ambition in the tech industry.
