Differing from other cross-border e-commerce platforms, Taobao’s overseas expansion offers a light-asset model featuring “zero return costs and zero operational costs” for merchants. Sellers simply need to enroll their existing Taobao stores in the “Overseas Growth Plan,” and their products will be automatically synced to international storefronts for sale. The platform manages returns and provides a complete end-to-end logistics chain for overseas sales.
Ye Jianqiu stated that since the plan’s launch in 2024, over one million merchants have joined. The GMV growth rate for enrolled merchants is three times higher than the overall overseas market average.
To help merchants better capitalize on the Singles’ Day growth opportunity, Taobao Overseas will invest 1 billion RMB in marketing funds to boost new customer acquisition internationally. During the Singles’ Day period, 12 of Taobao’s overseas sites will offer cross-border free shipping and free return services. This includes zero-minimum free shipping to Hong Kong and Macau (China), while Taiwan (China), Singapore, Malaysia, and Australia will receive substantial daily shipping coupons.
Furthermore, Taobao will internationally launch an interactive game for non-Chinese speakers called “Taobao Wonderland.” Users can earn “Gold Beans” through daily check-ins, which can be used to offset up to 50% of their purchase amount. New users in 16 countries and regions will also enjoy “1 Yuan Flash Sales” on their first order during the campaign.
In addition to combined on-and-off-platform promotions to drive new traffic for merchants, Taobao Overseas will provide focused support for key categories including Fashion, 3C Electronics, Furniture & Home Goods, Sports & Outdoors, Toys & Collectibles, and Automotive Parts.
According to Yi Shan, Head of the Taobao Overseas Merchant Center, dedicated category-specific channel pages will be launched on international sites for these key sectors during Singles’ Day. “This is not just for Singles’ Day; it represents our long-term platform strategy. We will promote hundreds of category-specific campaigns throughout the year, offering substantial category-specific coupons and creating exclusive ‘Overseas Product’ badges for enrolled merchants to help them achieve better sales performance.”
It is reported that over one million merchants will sync their sales to regions outside mainland China during Singles’ Day, with 400 million items eligible for cross-border free shipping. Taobao Overseas estimates that 100,000 merchants will double their overseas sales during this period.
