Storage chip demand remains robust: capacity booked through 2030, Winbond Electronics ramps up expansion.

According to media reports, Winbond Electronics, the global leader in niche memory IDM, recently announced an early expansion of its Kaohsiung Luzhu plant in Taiwan, China, merging the originally phased Phase 2 and Phase 3 projects into a synchronized development of the Module B facility.
The plant is expected to begin construction of its cleanroom in 2027, with the equipment installation phase potentially starting as early as early 2029.
The direct driver behind this accelerated expansion comes from strong demand for Agentic AI. Institutional analysis points out that AI continues to boost memory capacity and advanced packaging demand, with "related growth trends expected to persist for a considerable period."
Some customers have already begun negotiating capacity allocations for 2029 and 2030 in advance, reflecting the market's high interest in Winbond's future capacity.
In terms of product and technology layout, the Kaohsiung plant's Module B will cover multiple product lines including Standard DRAM, CUBE DRAM, Wafer-on-Wafer (WoW), and silicon capacitors (Si-Cap), while also supporting 14nm and future 12nm DRAM processes, with plans to introduce EUV equipment down the line.
Regarding equipment deployment pace, Winbond will proceed in phases based on customer demand forecasts and long-term agreements (LTA) rather than ramping to full capacity at once, effectively controlling capital expenditures and maintaining financial flexibility.
On market performance, institutions note that Winbond's niche DRAM and SLC NAND both face supply shortages in the third quarter, with estimated quarter-over-quarter price increases of around 50%; NOR Flash, benefiting from aggressive stockpiling by major cloud service provider (CSP) customers that squeezes supply for other applications, is estimated to see quarter-over-quarter price gains of around 30%.
Although memory chip price increases are expected to moderate to 2%–5% in the fourth quarter, institutions project Winbond's revenue and profitability to maintain quarter-over-quarter growth, supported by increased DRAM capacity and rising shipment volumes.
