Intel's next-gen integrated graphics are solid! Linux driver defaults to supporting Nova Lake: S/HX series miss out on ray tracing

Intel's next-generation Nova Lake processors have reached a significant milestone in the Linux graphics ecosystem. According to the latest commit records in the open-source graphics driver library Mesa, support for the integrated GPUs in Nova Lake-S, U, H, and HX series has officially transitioned from experimental to stable and is now enabled by default.

This means Linux users will no longer need to manually force-probe the hardware via the force_probe parameter to use the integrated GPU when working with these new processors in the future.

This change covers Intel's Iris OpenGL driver and ANV Vulkan driver. The Mesa 26.3 development version has already integrated this update, and the development team plans to backport it to the earlier Mesa 26.2 release.

For developers and gamers relying on Linux environments, this means the last barrier to hardware compatibility has been removed.

From a technical standpoint, Nova Lake adopts a new-generation graphics architecture codenamed Xe3P. According to previous patch information, this architecture shows notable differences in hardware specifications across its various sub-models.

Among them, the mobile-oriented Nova Lake-U and H series will feature hardware-level ray tracing capabilities, while the higher-performance desktop S series and premium mobile HX series are confirmed to lack hardware ray tracing support.

This means desktop users seeking a gaming experience will still need to rely on discrete GPUs for complex ray tracing computations. This cutback in integrated GPU features may be intended to allocate more of the limited chip area to CPU compute cores.

However, the information currently available at the driver level is limited to feature toggles and interface support. Details regarding the Xe3P integrated GPU's specific stream processor count, maximum operating frequency, and actual performance improvements over the previous architecture are still awaiting official disclosure.
