300 lines of code to get it done! Lenovo ThinkEdge SE30/SE60 adds watchdog protection: automatic reboot on system crash

Lenovo recently submitted a new watchdog driver to the Linux kernel mainline for its ThinkEdge SE30 Gen2 and SE60 edge AI computers, enabling automatic reboot when the system freezes or crashes.

A watchdog is a common hardware protection mechanism in industrial computers. During operation, a timer continuously refreshes its countdown. If the system hangs and becomes unresponsive, the timeout triggers a forced reboot, keeping unattended devices from remaining down indefinitely.

The driver, named lenovo_se30g2_se60_wdt, was developed by Lenovo engineer Mark Pearson. It consists of fewer than 300 lines of code, identifies the platform via the motherboard chipset, and integrates with the Linux watchdog framework to handle feeding and timeout control.

The default timeout is 60 seconds, with a configurable range from 1 to 255 seconds. Lenovo previously maintained a similar driver for the older SE10 series, and this update extends coverage further.

The new SE30 Gen2 supports up to a Core 7 150U processor and can be pre-installed with Windows 11 or Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, targeting AI edge computing, digital signage, and other industrial scenarios.

The SE60, meanwhile, is powered by newer Arrow Lake processors, with options up to a Core Ultra 7 256H. It is certified for both Windows 11 and Ubuntu and is designed for edge AI computing and industrial tasks in demanding environments.

For industrial devices running in headless mode, the watchdog is especially critical. Without a display, keyboard, or mouse, manual intervention is impossible after a crash, making automatic reboot the only way to restore the system. The new driver makes both ThinkEdge devices more reliable under Linux and better suited for unattended operation.

The driver has now been merged into the mainline with Linux 7.3. Additionally, the watchdog updates in Linux 7.3 include new drivers such as the Nuvoton MA35D1.
